Spring is approaching<\/strong> (She said, as temperatures still drop below freezing at night), and at our house, that always means one thing:<\/p>

it\u2019s time for the annual chicken coop inspection!<\/strong> <\/p>

The hens have survived the winter (and a few foxes), but the roof has seen better days<\/strong>. So, this year, a proper mini-renovation is in order!<\/strong><\/p>

As I walked through the coop, carefully stepping over a few “surprises” (if you know, you know), I watched our hens, and that\u2019s when a statement from a friend popped into my head: <\/p>

“Aren’t eggs basically chicken periods?<\/strong>“<\/p>

Have you ever heard that one before? Well, let\u2019s find out if there\u2019s any truth to it!<\/p>

So, do chickens really \u201cmenstruate\u201d?<\/h2>

Menstruation is a process in mammals (like humans) where the uterine lining sheds<\/strong> when an egg is not fertilized. That\u2019s that time of the month when your LaliCup<\/a><\/strong> really comes in handy.<\/p>

But what about chickens? <\/h2>

Chickens don\u2019t have a uterus<\/strong>, they don\u2019t have a uterine lining<\/strong>, and\u2014most importantly<\/strong>\u2014they don\u2019t have periods. What they do have is their own unique system: instead of menstruating, they have an egg-laying cycle<\/strong>. Every day (or almost every day), a hen releases an egg, which then travels through her oviduct, getting coated with egg white<\/strong>, a membrane<\/strong>, and finally a shell<\/strong>. Then, the hen lays the egg<\/strong>\u2014whether it\u2019s fertilized or not. If there\u2019s no rooster around, it\u2019s just a regular egg you can scramble for breakfast. But if a rooster has done his job, then you\u2019ve got a potential chick<\/strong> in the making.<\/p>

This is essentially their version of ovulation, not menstruation, and for the most part, it\u2019s without PMS<\/strong>, which is very impressive<\/strong> (well, you should meet our always grumpy, loud, and PMS-y hen Favla<\/strong> \u2013 below, I\u2019m attaching a picture of her judgmental stare<\/strong>).<\/p>

So why do people say eggs are chicken periods?<\/h2>

Probably because it\u2019s an easy but incorrect comparison. If you really wanted to compare, it would be more accurate to say that an egg is a\u00a0chicken\u2019s ovulation<\/strong>.\u00a0Not so dramatic<\/strong>\u00a0now, is it?<\/p>

So, next time someone tells you that eggs are chicken periods, you can surprise them with your knowledge. And if they still insist, you can invite them to breakfast and serve them some scrambled \u201covulated\u201d eggs<\/strong>\u2014purely for scientific purposes<\/strong>, of course. <\/p>
