It was a Monday morning, and a packed day lay ahead—meetings, deadlines, and a long to-do list that left no room for slacking.
And as if that wasn’t enough… when I sat down on the toilet, my period caught me off guard—according to my tracker, it wasn’t due for another few days. Great, one more thing that felt out of my control.
I felt… well, menstrual. My head was a bit heavy, my body slower, but then something unexpected happened when I sat down at my computer. My thoughts flowed effortlessly, words formed into coherent sentences on their own, and I answered complex questions faster than usual.
The day ended with a sense of victory—how was this even possible?
Get ready for a mind-blowing revelation: Women actually perform better in cognitive tests when they’re on their period! |
A recent study by the UCL Institute of Sport, Exercise & Health (ISEH) found that women perform better on cognitive tests during menstruation. Fewer mistakes, faster reaction times, sharper focus—all during a time when we often feel the least prepared.
For years, it was believed that menstruation negatively impacts physical and mental performance, but this new research challenges that assumption. After analyzing data from 241 participants (both men and women), scientists discovered that women actually achieved their best cognitive performance during their period.
Dr. Flaminia Ronca, the lead author of the study, admitted she was just as surprised as we are. She believes this discovery could completely reshape how we understand women’s capabilities during menstruation. Imagine how coaches and athletes might start using this data to optimize training and performance!
Dr. Megan Lowery, another author of the study, adds that this newfound knowledge can help women better plan their work and activities, allowing them to take advantage of their natural strengths throughout their cycle.
Whether you’re an athlete or just crushing your daily to-do list, knowing that your brain might be in supercharge mode during your period is pretty empowering. It’s time to rethink how we view our capabilities during this time of the month.
